From the Wall Street Journal via astrodispatch (via Melissa Mates) comes this story of a Russian professor who forecasts a “55%” chance the US will disintegrate in 2010.
Mr. Panarin posits, in brief, that mass immigration, economic decline, and moral degradation will trigger a civil war next fall and the collapse of the dollar. Around the end of June 2010, or early July, he says, the U.S. will break into six pieces — with Alaska reverting to Russian control.
I love this guy, a Russian academic, for echoing some of my favorite right-wing paranoia. Mass immigration leading to civil war? A race war? Consider the paranoid fantasies of William Pierce’s “The Turner Diaries,” a best-selling racist screed in which Pierce writes, “it is frighteningly clear now that there is no way to win the struggle in which we [whites] are engaged without shedding torrents–veritable rivers–of blood.” Yes, the coming race war that leads to an economic collapse resulting from mass immigration. When Obama and McCain were running, the right-wing was salivating with ecstatic race-war hysteria, a theme that folks like Pierce, and Rush Limbaugh, and their millions of admirers, return again and again with relish. Fears of race war is a glorius American tradition, one used to argue against freeing slaves, and returned to by the original arguers’ intelectual descendents ever since.
I’m pleased to see former cold war adversaries sharing the same fantasies.
