Top 10 Shots of 2008

Via Kristopher Tapley, the top 10 shots of 2008. Tapley ranks the whistle shot in Milk at the top of the list. Harris Savides, the director of photography, has worked with director Gus Van Sant for awhile now and, between the two of them, in 2008 alone (Milk & Paranoid Park), the collaboration resulted in just many of the year’s best shots but in the year’s two best movies. Easily. (That Paranoid Park is actually be better than Milk and anything else this year, or in many years, is a subject for another time. Milk was great – amazing – but at the end of the day, conventional.)

Tapley uses the birthday scene in Revolutionary Road in his top 10. This vote goes to Kate Winslet’s beautiful abortion (even her abortions are beautiful). And even though Aronofsky’s hand-held trends towards obnoxious, the way the beauty of nearly every scene in The Wrestler seemed so accidental just proves Aronofsky’s immense talent.

Agreed, great shot. Saw Slumdog Millionaire last night as was equally impressed with the camera and post work. Paranoid Park was more interesting and challenging, albeit less important. Milk @ The Castro = Unforgettable Cinema Experience.
