The 2009 Oscar Nominations

The Oscar nominations are in.

I was wrong in believing that Gran Torino would be nominated for and win Best Picture. Perhaps more people clued into the film’s messianic undertones and deeply conservative perspective and, Hollywood being Hollywood, turned the other cheek, towards Brad Pitt.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button will win best picture. And just about everything else for which its nominated. Button presents itself as an introspective meditation on aging, love and mortality. Instead, it is a meditation on Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett and using CGI to find new ways to manipulate our emotions.

I may be proved wrong and Slumdog Millionaire will win Best Picture. What will not win is Milk, because it is the best picture of those nominated, and because it is about homosexuals saying “yes please” to equality and, as we’ve seen, California isn’t in the mood for such niceties.
